Have you heard about our Youth Committee?

When it comes to inspiring, empowering and motivating youth, the Kerrisdale Community Centre Society (KCCS) has come a long way. Launched in 2013, the KCCS Youth Committee began exploring ways to encourage 14-19-year-olds to become more involved in the community. At the time, youth could volunteer at centre-organized events and connect with peers in the Youth Games Room and pool. Revitalized in 2015 and fine-tuned since, the committee today oversees a wide range of events, activities and programs that

Arena of Ages

If these rafters could talk. After all, the Kerrisdale Arena is where Bill Haley and His Comets made local history playing Vancouver’s first rock concert in 1956 (below); where Frank Zappa offered “$10 to any hippie who’ll cut his hair right here on stage tonight” during a Mothers of Invention show in 1968; and where a raucous Motörhead gig in 1982 ultimately brought the venue’s concert days to a close. Opened in 1949 under the sponsorship of the

Remembering Norm Funk

The Kerrisdale Community Centre Society (KCCS) is sad to hear of the recent passing of Norm Funk. Norm was the KCCS accountant from 1990 to 2016, serving under seven different treasurers. During that time, he provided the structure of our financial statements and recommended many of the policies and protocols that continue to serve the society well today. Norm will be remembered as pleasant, knowledgeable, kind and thoughtful. We send our condolences to his family and

Let them eat cake!

Many thanks to all who attended our 80th anniversary celebration on Sunday, January 8. We hope you had a sweet time. 😉 As KCCS president Kathy McKay (in photo below with board member Fred Jay) says: “We were the first community centre on the west side of Vancouver. The goal of the initial organizers was to promote fitness and fun close to home. It’s great to see that we’re still providing services to the community, and

Volunteer of the Year Returns

After a two-year absence thanks to COVID, the Kerrisdale Community Centre Society’s (KCCS) Volunteer of the Year Award returned in 2022. Going back at least as far as 1983, according to our records and hallway photos, the annual award honours an individual for their outstanding spirit, knowledge and hours of service at the centre and/or in the community. At one time a citywide community-centre initiative coordinated by the Vancouver Park Board, the award is now handled

Second Story Circle: Photo Recap

The second Kerrisdale-Musqueam Story Circle, held in mid November, drew attendees of all ages and walks of life. After listening to Gitxsan artist and scholar Michael Blackstock share his thoughts and Indigenous knowledge on water sustainability, participants each created their own climate-change-themed collage (see photo above; find the full photo recap here). The collages were then joined together in one large collective piece, which now hangs in the Seniors Centre lobby beside a joint collage
