Joining the Kerrisdale Community Centre in January, personal trainer KJ Johal brings four-plus years of experience and a lifetime of sports and fitness to the gym.
Q: What is your favourite thing about being a personal trainer?
A: Meeting and connecting with new people. As a trainer I have met so many different people from so many different walks of life.
Q: What do you want clients to take away from your training?
A: New healthy habits that will help them in all areas of their life, not just reaching their fitness goals. I genuinely want my clients to experience a healthy lifestyle change.
Q: What most inspired you to pursue personal training in the first place?
A: My dad was super athletic growing up and he put my brother in sports; I followed suit at the age of four after seeing my brother play. I went on to play soccer for 20 years, winning provincials three times. I took kinesiology at school and started personal training on the side. I completely fell in love with everything about it and I’ve stuck with it ever since.
Q: What is your top career highlight?
A: Helping one of my first clients drop 80 pounds in seven months. We worked together twice a week; seeing her reach her goals was so rewarding. I love seeing my clients get their spark back.
Q: What is your favourite way to spend a weekend?
A: Out in nature. I love being outdoors and exploring new hikes and trails around the Lower Mainland. (See photos below.)
Q: What’s your go-to comfort food?
A: Sushi!
