2023 Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to Yvonne Davis (middle, photo above), named 2023 Volunteer of the Year at the Kerrisdale Community Centre Holiday Party! Presented by Kerrisdale Community Centre Society president Kathy McKay (left) and seniors recreation programmer Austin Su, the annual award honours an individual for their outstanding spirit, knowledge and hours of service at the centre and/or in the community.

Relocating from South Africa, Davis became a society member eight years ago when she joined the Busy Bees volunteer knitting group. She’s since volunteered at the Busy Bees Boutique, launched and continues to produce the monthly seniors Monarch newsletter and pivoted the Busy Bees program into the Knit a Bit & More program to foster social connections post pandemic. Most recently, Davis opened Mary’s Corner in honour of Busy Bees co-founder Mary Dopson; the pop-up shop sells the group’s knitted goods, with funds going back to seniors programming. To date, they’ve contributed $3,500-plus.

What’s more, Yvonne Davis is loved by everyone. She has the warmest of hearts and a caring nature. Indeed, staff have witnessed her walking new members around the centre, explaining the programs and services, and speaking through translation apps. She’s truly an ambassador to the centre and contributes greatly to its social and inclusive environment.
