Faye Hung brings a wealth of experience and accolades to the danceroom floor.
Specializing in standard and Latin ballroom dances, she and her former dance partner were not only finalists in top-level dance sport competitions around the world (think World Championships, World Cups, Asia Cups and Grand Slams), they were also the Hong Kong national standard champions for 10 years straight.
“Then in 2014 we won the bronze medal at the WDSF World Championship in Italy,” says Hung, who grew up in Hong Kong and attended UBC before moving to Italy. “It took us 11 years to get to the top of our career and I would not change it for anything. The hard work and sacrifice were worth it.”
After hanging up her competitive dancing shoes, Hung returned to Canada to focus on her coaching career. An instructor at the Kerrisdale Community Centre since fall 2024, she hopes her students find their way to an active lifestyle through dance.
“Ballroom dancing is an activity that challenges the mind and body at the same time. You have to remember the steps and the sequence and be able to execute the sequence to the music,” says Hung, who is also a national championship adjudicator for Canada DanceSport.
What she most loves about her teaching role, though, are the social aspects. “I like getting to know about the people and their families. I also love seeing the improvements in the students every week.”
When she’s not pivoting on the dancefloor, Hung can be found finessing her swing on the golf course. “I love the precision that comes with golfing, just like in dancing. Although I must say that dancing is easier because, if the timing isn’t perfect for a second, your dancing doesn’t fall apart. In golf, if the timing isn’t exact, your ball ends up in places you didn’t want it to go.”
