Instructor Q&A: Rachel Yung

Let’s give a warm welcome to Rachel Yung! Born and raised in Hong Kong, the Marpole-based instructor is excited to bring her passion for Chinese painting to the Kerrisdale Community Centre.
 
Q: What is your favourite thing about teaching Chinese painting?
A: Sharing both the techniques and quiet joy of Chinese painting – helping students experience its beauty, rhythm and expressive power.
 
Q: What do you want students to take away from your class?
A: Practical skills, confidence in their own creativity and a sense of joy and calm that comes from painting.
 
Q: What inspired you to pursue Chinese painting as a career?
A: Chinese painting is not widely taught in Canada; I feel passionate about sharing this rich art form and keeping its traditions alive through teaching.
 
Q: What is your top career highlight?
A: Being selected as the artist-in-residence at Whitewater Mountain Resort in Nelson.
 
Q: What is your favourite way to spend a weekend?
A: Outdoors – hiking, picnicking, walking dogs, camping, snowboarding and biking.
 
Q: What’s your go-to comfort food?
A: Classic Hong Kong street food, especially siu mai and curry fish balls.
