Instructor Spotlight: Vasily Lykov/Vancouver Gavel Club

While public speaking can spark fear among the bravest of beings, it can alternatively provide a creative outlet and sense of community. Indeed, that’s what drew Vasily Lykov to the craft when he joined Toastmasters International almost a decade ago while attending university.

Now a coach and coordinator of the Vancouver Gavel Club (an affiliate of Toastmasters International tailored to youth), Lykov shares his passion and knowledge as an instructor of the Toastmasters Youth Program at the Kerrisdale Community Centre.

“We provide a self-guided learning space for our members to develop public speaking and leadership skills by giving various prepared, impromptu and evaluative speeches. Our elected members also serve as stewards of their club,” says Lykov. “I’ve seen this unlock untapped confidence and reflectiveness countless times.”

Are you between 12 and 17 years old and looking to improve your public speaking skills? Stay tuned for the next Toastmasters Youth Program at the Kerrisdale Community Centre – winter registration opens 9 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6.
