Instructor Spotlight: Stephanie Hartfield

More than half of Canadian households are now home to a dog or cat. And no wonder – our furry friends bring us much joy, companionship and comfort. But pet ownership also comes with the heartache and sadness that follows their inevitable passing.

It was just such a loss that prompted counsellor and art therapist Stephanie Hartfield to launch her own program at the Kerrisdale Community Centre this fall. Ideal for anyone seeking connection, understanding and growth during their own journey of loss, the new 12-week Pet Loss Art Therapy Group offers a compassionate space in which to navigate grief through creative expression.

“When my dog, Nicki, passed away I was looking for a group and I couldn’t find much in the way of resources,” says Hartfield. “The loss of a pet can be challenging and it’s not always recognized. I’m hoping to create a space for people who are grieving the loss of their pet to honour memories and heal together while creating mementos.”

Wanting to be a counsellor since she was 12 and loving art from a young age, Hartfield today is a BCACC registered clinical counsellor and BCATA art therapist. “Art therapy allows me to blend both of my passions,” she says.

In her free time Hartfield can be found walking her dog Arabella (Ari) in Kerrisdale and finding new hiking trails on the weekend. She’s also passionate about aerial yoga and enjoys trying new flavours of bubble tea.
