Growing up singing and playing musical instruments, Abigail LaForest would later discover that music is not just for self-expression but also for bringing people together and supporting well-being.
A recipient of the George Stroumboulopoulos Scholarship for their advocacy work in disability care, LaForest has witnessed firsthand how group music therapy can help with pain management and improve quality of life. Earning a bachelor of music therapy at Capilano University, they were able to combine their passion for music with their desire to make a difference in people’s lives.
Now a registered Music Together teacher conducting early-childhood research-based music classes at centres throughout the Lower Mainland, LaForest is excited to be joining the Kerrisdale Community Centre this fall.
“My biggest hope is to create a joyful and welcoming space where families can connect with each other through music,” says LaForest. “For the children, I want music to feel like play – something that sparks creativity, movement and laughter. For the parents, I hope they leave feeling inspired with new ways to use music at home to support bonding and development.
“I’m most looking forward to seeing those little ‘lightbulb moments’ when children engage with rhythm or song in their own unique way, and to watching parents and kids make memories together.”
Growing up in rural Alberta, LaForest now relishes living close to the mountains and ocean in North Vancouver while enjoying birding, hiking, relaxing by the beach and spending time with loved ones.
At press time there were still a few spots left in fall’s Music Together with Abigail. But watch for more programs with Abigail when the winter brochure drops in early December.
