The third installment of the Kerrisdale-Musqueam Story Circle drew more than 30 attendees to the centre’s auditorium on June 17. The event was organized by the Kerrisdale Community Centre Society’s Community Engagement Committee (CEC) and assisted by four youth volunteers.
Produced by the Vancouver Arts Colloquium Society and made possible through the generous support of the BC Arts Council, the captivating documentary film, Emerging Ancestors, took attendees into the realm of human transcendence via the Indigenous and ecological interpretations of an elder. Through the lens of Indigenous wisdom, the film illustrated the transformative power of art in the healing journey of trauma, struggle and the past and the vital process of decolonization.
In line with the CEC’s unwavering commitment to fostering community participation in truth and reconciliation, a vibrant post-screening activity engaged attendees in the decolonization-themed Word Cafe. Ideas and experiences were openly and respectfully shared in this safe space. The event concluded with a collaborative art-making session guided by Musqueam collaborator Grace Ulu.
Together, these elements wove a tapestry of connection, understanding and shared growth, marking yet another significant milestone in the CEC’s ongoing journey of community-driven transformation. 📸 SiMing Zheng
