After witnessing older women having fun, keeping fit and exuding youthful vitality at a Zumba class at the Kerrisdale Community Centre, Maggie Blue O’Hara had an idea. She would launch a new program to help women 40 years and older reconnect with their feminine energy while enjoying a variety of exercises in a supportive environment.
Enter VanCougar Dance Cabaret.
“As a 50-year-old woman who has been a dancer my whole life, and is still fit and feeling beautiful and full of youthful energy, I want to share my tips and skills on how to reignite the feeling of being healthy, happy, fit and joyful through dance, voice, qigong and yoga warmups, ecstatic freeform dance, and contemporary and cabaret dance styles,” says O’Hara.
Also a singer and voice-over actress, O’Hara adds that she purposefully took the “Van” from “Vancouver” and combined it with “ ‘cougar’ to take the power back from that word and reclaim the fact that older women can still enjoy being sensual, playful and sexy.”
Making her KCC instructor debut this spring, O’Hara has a wealth of creative work experience to pull from. Among her many past projects, she was artistic co-director and choreographer at her own dance theatre company in Hong Kong for 10 years and has worked with Disney, Cirque Du Soleil, Krug Champagne and other high-end brands.
Born in Victoria and raised in Kitsilano, O’Hara has travelled the world and now lives in Kerrisdale as “a mama, dance choreographer, singer songwriter, author and teacher of performing arts and awakening our senses.”
